Where Conservation Meets Community

Greetings!

As 2025 comes to a close, we are reflecting on one of the greatest challenges facing conservation in the communities surrounding Victoria Falls: human–wildlife conflict.

Each year, families living along the borders of protected areas such as Zambezi National Park and nearby communal lands face the daily reality of sharing their homes with wildlife. Lions and hyenas prey on livestock that often represent a family’s entire livelihood. Elephants, in search of food and water, destroy crops and can threaten human lives.

When this happens, families can lose everything in a single night — and both people and wildlife suffer the consequences.

At VFWT, we are working alongside communities to change this story.

Through mobile, predator-proof bomas, we help farmers protect their livestock from lions and hyenas at night, dramatically reducing losses and preventing retaliatory killings. Our chilli-based elephant deterrent programmes empower farmers to safely defend their fields, fostering peaceful coexistence between people and elephants.

But we cannot do this work without your support.

Your year-end gift can make a tangible difference to ensuring this vital work continues next year:

  • USD 25 — helps supply chilli briquettes to one household for an entire farming season
  • USD 100 — supports our 24-hour wildlife hotline, alerting communities when animals move into their areas
  • USD 250 —  helps repair mobile predator-proof bomas, keeping them in the field and protecting livestock and livelihoods
  • USD 2500 — funds one new mobile boma capable of protecting up to 200 head of livestock, supporting as many as 20 households

This work is not just about equipment. It’s about building lasting capacity. Your donation helps train conservation scientists and field teams to master powerful tools that make every mission safer, smarter, and more effective.

Together, we can turn technology into a force for conservation.

Since introducing the bomas, communities have seen a marked reduction in livestock losses – supporting more peaceful coexistence between people and predators.
